National Shipbuilding Strategy

This strategy meets the challenge set by Sir John Parker's independent report and outlines plans to transform naval shipbuilding in the UK.  Published in 2017 by the Ministry of Defence, National Shipbuilding Strategy: the future of naval shipbuilding in the UK, sees the government accept Sir John Parker’s recommendations.

It outlined an ambition to transform the procurement of naval ships, make the UK’s maritime industry more competitive, grow the Royal Navy fleet by the 2030s, export British ships overseas, and boost innovation, skills, jobs, and productivity across the UK.

A refresh of this strategy took place in 2021 and 2022 under the Boris Johnson led Conservative Government.  The refresh, published in March 2022 outlined the importance of the civil maritime enterprise in underpinning the defence sector vessel builds.  A copy of the updated strategy is available here.
