About the Society of Maritime Industries

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is the trade association for the UK’s maritime engineering, science and technology community.

We enable maritime organisations of all types and sizes to thrive. We do this in various ways - including annual conferences, overseas events and trade missions. We support our members to raise their profile and enjoy meaningful collaborations, providing business and networking opportunities throughout the year.

As a trusted advisor to the UK government, we look to create new momentum for our members and progress for the industry as a whole. We have a unique perspective on how to create new levels of maritime innovation, within our own diverse member community and beyond.

SMI provides a wide range of activities both internationally and in the UK for the benefit of the maritime engineering business community. The members’ interests are represented by our six councils which focus on the markets in:

1. Marine science and technology
2. Commercial marine, including ship building, repair and equipment
3. Maritime autonomous systems
4. Digital technology
5. Ports and terminals infrastructure
6. Maritime defence and security, including naval platforms, systems, security and safety

Our approach is entirely member-focused, championing their needs, prioritizing potential opportunities and facilitating collaboration.
