Royal Navy Industry Engagement: RN CC&S Conference, 10 - 11 June 2025
Overview
The Royal Navy will host a RN Climate Change & Sustainability Conference at Leach Building, HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth, PO2 8BY on 10 – 11 June 2025.
This conference forms part of ongoing work within the Royal Navy to build awareness, understanding and interest across the workforce of the relevance of Climate Change and Sustainability to our work and lives.
Conference Aims
As Phase 1 of the RN CC&S Plan draws to a close, it is time for the RN to move into Phase 2: a 10 year period of more deeply understanding the impacts of climate change on our operations, and the benefits that sustainability offers, through enhancing our resilience.
The aim of this conference is to provide the workforce with the opportunity to engage with specific themes in the CC&S resilience space that hold interest to them both professionally and personally.
The themes covered have been selected to be broad enough to appeal to a range of roles and interests. This year we hope to more strongly promote in person attendance.
Conference Content
Representatives from the Royal Navy will speak about RN specific context within each theme, and guest speakers will add perspective and broader LFE to these sessions.
Themes are set, as below, but structure is flexible, depending upon interested parties. This may take the form of a series of structured presentations, or short sound bites followed by a panel Q&A. This can be discussed with the interested parties at the point of selection.
Prospective speakers should be well versed in the theme they propose to speak about. They should have given thought to the relevance of the subject to the RN, and insights that they might offer in the subject matter to engage interest. The selected themes available, with suggested topics, are:
- Climate change risks (physical and transitional): scenario modelling, tipping points, likely impacts on RN, health risks, Global Megatrends and their impact on Defence tasking.
- Innovation: how innovation and technology can mitigate risks and bring advantage, promoting an innovative mindset, leveraging commercial innovation for Defence.
- A resilient portfolio: why does a resilient portfolio matter, learning from the commercial sector, advantages to thinking outside the box, topics to cover include Estates, Vessels, Value Chain.
- Climate change mitigation: what are the benefits to RN/MOD, how to write robustly into a business case or contract, drive from Government.
- There will be the opportunity for speakers to network with each other and Royal Navy personnel over the two days.
On the evening of 10 June there will be an event to present sustainability awards to RN and industry personnel and teams, who have shown leadership and innovation in this field.
