BMT named Australasia’s Most Innovative Company
Thanks to BMT’s impressive innovation program and world-class flood modelling software, ‘TUFLOW’, the regional business secures The Australian Financial Review Most Innovative Company award in Australia and New Zealand for 2020 - a recognition that reflects on the long-term commitment the organisation has made to placing innovation at the centre of its strategy.
TUFLOW sets the industry standard high and has contributed to reshaping the global landscape of flood and hydraulic modelling.
(SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 0900 AEST) BMT has been announced as one of Australia and New Zealand’s most innovative companies in the 2020 Australian Financial Review (AFR) BOSS Most Innovative Companies List, for the industry-leading flood simulation software, TUFLOW.
The prestigious annual list is based on a rigorous assessment process managed by a leading innovation consultancy in conjunction with a panel of industry expert judges.
The assessment measures a top innovation implemented in the past two-years. Specifically, the judges look at how valuable the problem is that the innovation is solving, the quality and uniqueness of the solution, and the level of impact that the innovation has had.
BMT were also assessed internal elements such as innovation culture, strategy, resources and process, which demonstrate a sustainable and repeatable approach to innovation.
“We are truly honoured to have been recognised as a leading innovator across Australia and New Zealand,” commented BMT Global Business Development Director, Rob Teasdale.
“The development and delivery of our products is a direct result of planned innovation processes that operate globally across BMT,” says Mr Teasdale.
“The key focus of these processes is to address our customers’ most challenging problems with innovative solutions. Innovation is not just a catchphrase at BMT. It is a deliberate – and successful – strategy,” says Mr Teasdale.
“Innovation is at the core of everything we do. We have grown a business that is driven by innovation,” he says.
BMT’s innovation strategy is built on the principles that it must solve a current or future problem, deliver commercial value to BMT, align with strategic business objectives and provide a rewarding and collaborative workplace for staff.
“Our strategy acknowledges that staff are the drivers and owners of our innovative capability. We ensure that our people have the freedom to think without limits.” he says.
Mr Teasdale concludes, “BMT’s record of innovation, ranging from the design of the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier to the Australian-developed TUFLOW 2020 flood modelling software, comes from a passion to achieve the best for our customers.”
TUFLOW’s 2020 release allows its users to build flood simulations quickly, accurately, and autonomously. Simulations enable a better understanding of flood risk to assist government and emergency services to manage flood prone areas, climate change uncertainties and reduce the risk to life.
TUFLOW was originally developed by engineer Bill Syme, BMT’s software business lead and an internationally recognised authority on flood hydraulics, in 1989. He has led every update of the product since then, including the groundbreaking TUFLOW 2020.
“Flood modelling allows us to understand the outcomes of multiple flood scenarios before they occur. This enables our customers to mitigate major disasters and design and construct necessary infrastructure,” Syme says.
Syme believes TUFLOW 2020 has “reshaped the global landscape of flood and hydraulic modelling”.
“TUFLOW 2020 equips engineers, planners and emergency services with a world-leading tool to better manage flood risks,” he says.
“TUFLOW 2020 allows our customers to execute their flood simulations much faster – up to 400 times faster – and with more accuracy than ever before. This improves their ability to plan for and manage flood events.”
This award recognises the most innovative organisations from across industries in Australia and New Zealand. Winners were announced by The Australian Financial Review’s BOSS Magazine on Thursday, 8 October 2020.
