Summary:
UoS conducts world-leading research covering a broad-spectrum of topics from ship design to oceanography. Supported by state-of-the-art testing facilities, UoS hosts number of research centres including MarRI-UK, and collaborates with a wide-range of external partners.
The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering (NAOME) is currently ranked number 1 in the United Kingdom based on Shanghai Rankings 2023. Our vision is to uphold our position as a world-leading centre of marine technology by developing a sustainable research environment that supports continuous improvement and growth.
NAOME hosts state-of-the-art research facilities and conducts research which is useful for the industry. Our staff are internationally recognised for their expertise. We have the track record and kudos for leading major research thinking in ocean energy and maritime.
Research Topics
Research at NAOME is organised into two central research units:
- Marine Transportation Research Unit
- Ocean Energy Research Unit
The units are bringing together academics working in closely related research areas, creating synergies and the critical mass for addressing all maritime and offshore research challenges to shape the sector's future.
