SMI PTG present the Annual Current Trends in Shipping Review 2022 – Resilience in the face of disruption, challenge and transition

This annual symposium, brought to you by the SMI Ports & Terminals Group and kindly hosted by HFW will provide vital market intelligence, analysis and perspectives drawn from staggering times in shipping.

Following a strong “post-Covid” recovery in 2021, seaborne trade growth has stalled in 2022 amid clear challenges from macroeconomic headwinds, the Ukraine conflict, inflation and trends in China. However, significant supply chain disruption and port congestion continue to provide “disruption upside” and shipping markets have performed strongly in many sectors, with changing trade patterns, increasing tonne-mile demand and other “inefficiencies” also proving supportive. Geopolitics, energy security, including near-term changes in the energy mix, and commodity price inflation are now in focus.

Industry planning remains focussed on “Green & Tech”, including the energy transition and renewables. Though uncertainties remain around technology, timing and environmental regulation, targets and policies continue to intensify. The fuel transition is in its early days but a start has been made. With shifting trade and energy patterns, and major fleet renewal ahead, the green transition will have a clear impact on port handling facilities and their readiness for the future. Join us for this vital, in-person, symposium which provides maritime professionals with the latest expert opinion, analysis and intelligence on market conditions as well as the legal and operational dynamics that are shaping the outlook of the shipping and logistics sector.
Hear from our expert panel of speakers:

• Trevor Crowe - Director, Clarksons Research – will present his expert analysis of the shipping market via a comprehensive source of commercial data on shipping and the shipping markets. This data and intelligence will help frame the critical decisions for Port& Terminal stakeholders as well as the wider maritime enterprise.

• James Neale, Associate, HFW - will present perspectives on the legal implications, consequences and disputes arising from the turmoil and market disruption taking place in logisticswith a particular focus on the implications of international sanctions on logistics operators.

• Justin Atkin, Port of Antwerp-Bruges – the Ports perspective, the impacts and challenges presented by shifting trade patterns on handling facilities and the ports readiness for the future.

Participants will also have the opportunity to contribute Question and Answer sessions to address further questions and provide comments to the panel of speakers.
